4 out of 5 stars I liked it   May 5, 2010
Laura Newton (Oregon)
If you're not hung up on how much is fact and how much is fiction, it's an entertaining read! I liked it and got through it in a matter of days! I didn't realize that this book was controversial until I had already read it and went to give it a review on here. I'm glad the part of him getting his teeth done with no pain killers was probably part of the "fiction" because that was very disturbing.

3 out of 5 stars HoustonE reviews A Million Little Pieces   April 27, 2010

Also another one of my favorite novels--this one pissed Oprah off due to the fact that the author lied/exaggerated some parts in the book even though it's classified as a auto-biography. I thought it was very intriguing even written by any mind, but that's my opinion and the amount of authentication in a autobiography is a on-going debate.

Survive From Addiction A sharp shriek of pain throttles deep in the tunnel of the earlobe.
The pain is not far from the brain. Soon, the soft, sensitive muscle is irritated by the long eerie noise from the ear. In effect, quickly distorts the senses and develops anger and hate. James Frey's rage grew on his depression and therefore became an alcoholic at the age of ten. Later, he found his life empty and alone which led him to smoke crack. Not too long he was on the line of being dead at the age of twenty-three, and then James was forced to go to rehab. Unlike most addicts, he survived at the terrible state he was in. The biography James Frey wrote consists of inspiring moments to uplift fallen victims or people who are going through tough times. Therefore, A Million Little Pieces serves lessons worth remembering to contribute a better future society.
The life of James Frey carries values to future civilizations because the future can reconcile or prevent Frey's mistakes. He became obsessed with drinking to escape from his rage and smoking crack to "fill" his empty life. Many lives can be referenced around the world or at least the state of depression and stress. Competition in education, jobs and living in luxury have increased. In the near future, competitions will increase even more between people and indeed, stress will follow. People with stressful jobs can wash it away with alcohol or even with tobacco. The age requirement for the use of alcohol and drugs has been raised in the years, but the addiction and abuse is still increasing fairly high. Frey, for example has used alcohol for almost everything, from being angry to waste time. His depression of addiction and unable to have an active life stressed his family and friends. He was unable to keep a girlfriend, his job, and later his own body. He was sick all the time from the after effects of alcohol, throwing up twice a day. That is where many people are heading in the future: nowhere. Thirteen million in the U.S. alone are suffering from alcohol abuse and most of suicides and car deaths are caused by alcohol. However, Frey became a strong individual who pulled himself together physically and mentally. His story reveals his actions and thoughts that made him successful. Even if a person cannot refer their life to Frey's, they can take inspiration of his achievement and put that working ethics to their life. Frey's life story can teach many people of the effects of alcohol and drugs, which could prevent disastrous addictions. His story can also be used to inspire future generations of strong willingness and dedications when times are though. Awareness, prevention and being strong will create a better environment for the future as well as family and friends.
A Million Little Pieces serves lessons worth remembering to contribute a better society because the story shows the values of relative and friends. Therefore, to improve society, people must first be able to improve relations between families and friends. In the past, many people had family picnics, camping and vacations. Now, most kids do not want to go outdoors and spend family time because of video games and other technology activities. Many incredible inventions like the computer, and game consoles are disturbing the time together with families and actual friends. One of the lessons Frey learned was that he could not have made it without his family and friends. He realized how embarrassing he was to his parents, but they stood by him heartbroken. Also, his brother visited James to comfort him in rehab. In addition, his friends who went through similar struggles, guided him to his impossible goal of being sober. Many times when Frey wanted to chug alcohol or smoke pounds of crack, his friends refrained him from doing so. Leonard, Frey's friend, who also happens to be the mob king of the west, did all he could, even by threatening him to stay sober. This shows how important family and friends relationships are to the future, especially with the fast growing technology. Many people take relationships as granted, because it's there all the time in a cycle. However, the story of James Frey reminds someone of the importance and can also help develop a well bond. James had a rage towards his parents at the beginning of the story that clashed together to show each other's differences. Later, Frey who was rugged and strong broke down to his parents and apologized. He realized the quality of life with them and understood the importance. Therefore, his experiences will enhance other relations to improve the quality of their life.
In the end, the experiences of James Frey are one of the disastrous, yet the most successful life stories in history. His self-conflicts and falls are shown to caution others to be able to control alcohol and not let drugs in the way. If fallen, the book shows great uplifting stories that explain the true value of family and friends that can help them up. A Million Little Pieces explains life lessons and family values that can build a beneficial society.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Read   April 9, 2010
Desiree Liu
I have been meaning to read this book for some time now. I am glad that I did. I realize that it's not completely true and that the truth was definitely stretched here. But at least he confessed to it at the beginning. I can imagine the disappointment readers must have experienced before this was revealed though. Even if I hadn't known it was part fiction, I would have guessed it. The author makes himself out to be some sort of super bad ass in the book, which I highly doubt could have been the case (especially after viewing his his picture and reading his own description of himself)

It's the kind of book that I let me friends know I was reading and recommended that they read too. I'm not going to lie, it was graphic and I had the worst nightmare I've had in a few years while reading this book. I stopped reading it before I went to bed. Some parts I had to skim because they were painting TOO good of a picture for me. I'm not usually the squeamish type, but geez--that was disgusting.

I know some people really hated the author and the book when the truth came out, but I still enjoyed the book.
