Amazon.com Volume 18 is the only one of the first 24 Dick's Picks to feature music from 1978, culling from two (maybe three) February dates in the Midwest. Following an artistic peak that lasted most of the 1970s, the band sounded more ragged and raucous in 1978 than they had during the previous few years, trading in some of their more textured, willowy tendencies for greater aggression and abandon. The centerpiece here is the half-hour "Scarlet"/"Fire" from the Cedar Falls, Iowa, show, which is followed soon after by an explosive "Other One" and emotional "Wharf Rat." Throughout, Garcia's guitar work is as adventurous and bold as ever, and though the band as a whole is beginning to fray a bit, it does serve to heighten the sense of adventure. --Marc Greilsamer
better than 1977!July 17, 2009 aspiring saint(in the moment zone) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
These shows are like the hottest jams from 1977, but with Jerry using the richer sounding Irwin guitar from '73-'74! There are a couple MOMENTS where feedback interferes or the piano is mixed too high that diminish from what is maybe the most powerful jamming since Rolling Thunder. This is NO REASON NOT TO BUY this though, it is easily one of the best DP's, and is often overlooked b/c later 1978 shows tend to be weak. The Scarlet>Fire is considered the best jam-wise released by many...and I dont even think that is the best part of this CD! EXCELLENT Estimated> Exc Eyes> EXC Playin> EXC Wheel. Hot first set includes tingly Music Never Stopped with the whole band in perfect tune! A CANT MISS!
Remember the unborn people in your prayers and politics. We ALL need forgiveness, but we cannot recieve it until we intend to stop supporting injustices. Why are people turned off by pictures if there is nothing wrong with it? Why is it "cruel" to discuss if it is akin to getting your tonsils removed. IT IS NOT HEALTHCARE! I have lost a sibling, and my Mother has Breast Cancer from oral contraceptives and abortion! Science backs this up!
A solid Dick's PickJanuary 10, 2009 doctormanny(Pittsburgh, PA) I primarily bought DP 18 to hear the Scarlet Begonias>Fire on the Mountain combination on disc 3, which is widely regarded as one of the best ever. I was not disappointed. Discs 2 and 3 also provide a number of beautifully understated versions of expansive Grateful Dead songs, including an Estimated Prophet>Eyes of the World>Playing in the Band>The Wheel>Playing in the Band mix and a Truckin'>Drums>Other One>Wharf Rat mix. Disc 1 presents a standard mix of first set material with Cold Rain and Snow being my personal favorite. The quality of the music and the sound are solid throughout. As the jamming in DP 18 generally tends to be very understated, it took me a few listens to really appreciate the beauty of the playing in these shows. If you are patient, I believe that you will really enjoy it too. Highly recommended.

ONE OF THE BEST DICK'S PICKSNovember 7, 2008 Steven Dowell(BRISTOL VIRGINIIA) I HAVE WELL OVER HALF OF THE PICKS SERIES AND I HAVE TO SAY THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST. THE ONLY BETTER ONES I HAVE ARE #'S 10 ,12, AND 34. I LOVE THE SOUND OF THESE 3 DISC'S. DICK'S PICKS # 14 IS THE WORST SOUNDING OF ALL THE ONES I HAVE BUT THIS ONE IS RIGHT UP THERE WITH ANYTHING THEY RECORDED. I 'M NOT REAL BIG ON LONG REVIEWS BUT IF YOUR A FAN OF 1978 DEAD THEN GET THIS. THE OTHER REVIEWS WILL TELL YOU ALL ABOUT THIS PICK AND THE ONLY KNOCK I SEE ON IT FROM SOMEONE ELSE IS THAT JERRY'S GUITAR SOUNDS THIN AND TINNY BUT I DON'T AGREE AT ALL, IN FACT I THINK IT SOUNDS BETTER ON THESE DISCS THAN ANYTHING THEY HAVE PUT OUT !!! I PROBABLY WON'T BE BUYING ANYMORE PICKS BUT IF I WERE YOU AND YOU WERE STARTING A COLLECTION PUT THIS ONE IN YOUR TOP 5 !!! OH YEAH, HOW COME YOU CAN'T FIND DICK'S PICKS # 34 ON AMAZON ANYWHERE? THAT IS A REALLY GREAT PICK BUT I'VE LOOKED, HOPING TO SEE SOME REVIEWS ON IT BUT IT IS NOT TO BE FOUND. CAN ANYONE AGREE WITH ME THAT THIS IS A TOP 2 PICK ? THANKS STEVE DOWELL

Loud and festive! The boys came out smoking and wailed nicely. Good clean sound also.
